Benrath Palace was built as a "maison de plaisance" and served as a summer residence. Elector Carl Theodor von der Pfalz and his wife Elisabeth Augusta had the palace built between 1755 and 1771 according to plans by the Palatine court architect Nicolas de Pigage. In its architectural structure, it is one of the best-preserved pleasure and hunting palaces. The Corps de Logis is the architectural highlight of the palace, which consists of five building sections. Today, the annexes house the Museum of Garden Art, the Natural History Museum, the castle café and a museum shop.
The listed palace park covers more than 61 hectares, of which around 45 hectares are designated as a nature reserve. The park is of high quality in terms of horticultural art as well as cultural and natural history. Commissioned to redesign the area around the old moated castle, Nicolas Pigage transformed the old game park into a large boskett, which was reforested and made accessible by a regular system of paths in a star shape. In addition to the boskett, the park is characterised by bodies of water such as the palace and mirror ponds as well as a cascade and the gardens of the electress and elector in front of the electoral flats. The park with its integrated gardens and water areas is inseparably linked to the palace architecture.
In March 2000, the "Stiftung Schloss und Park Benrath" (Benrath Palace and Park Foundation) was established, a foundation under private law based in the state capital Düsseldorf. The primary objective of the foundation is to preserve the palace and park as a total work of art, to use them in a manner appropriate to their status as monuments, to make them accessible to the public and to highlight them as a cultural attraction.
